I would say Connolly is counting on the fact that when it comes to free stuff from the government the 11th district, like many others, are filled with closet progressive democrats. The low voter turn out reflects this at every election.

As for his posistion on illegal access to health care? He knows it is not being denied to them now anyway, and if the amnesty comes down he can vote for that too.

Rein in the damn lawyers and cap "their" fees regarding medical issues, eliminate the cross state problems with insurance portability and the savings will pay for health stamps for the kennel kept denizens.

@ I'm Just Saying...

Your original post was incorrect - and I proved it. "Healthcare reform" has everything to do with Obama - and most Americans don't want it. Obama and his ilk are destroying our country, and "healthcare reform" is just one measure they are using to complete their mission.

There are only 12 million people who want insurance that do not have it. The 47 million figure cited by the Dems is a lie. So we are going to destroy our healthcare system and have socialized medicine for 12 million people?

For all of you people out there who want socialized medicine - you go ahead and pay for it - but don't use my tax money to pay for it and don't destroy the healthcare system in the process. I pay for my health insurance - and my premiums increase every year to pay for those who do not have it and use the emergency room as their doctor's office.

By the way, I didn't need to do a Google search to come up with the latest poll results on how Americans feel about "healthcare reform."

"Constitutional" or even better "Freedom", Is everyone forget about it? Health care reform is just another way saying please taking my freedom away. We need is "health insurance" reform. I though I don't understand English. I don't feel so bad now that 220 of them don't understand English either, and they are support to be the "SMART" one:)

How in the heck do you think illegals get treated when they flood our ERs? Or anyone else for that matter - who doesn't have insurance? They are never turned away. If you think those countries have it made in the shade with their socialist medicine, then I suggest you pack your bags and move on!

FED UP... no one can be denied medical care? My mistake, I thought you lived in the U.S.A. You must be logging in from Canada, England, Japan, or one of the other industrialized nations where insurance companies don't routinely deny benefits to save a few bucks (excuse me, increase shareholder value).

DPortM, I don't remember mentioning the health care plan proposed by Obama. I'm talking about Health Care reform in general. Even Republicans in the House and Senate agree that we need to do something.

Please read posts a bit more carefully before doing your Google search (and STOP thinking everthing is about Obama).

Got health care? Many folks don’t. It’s about life and death and the free market has failed us. Questions?

You are wrong. More people HAVE health care than NOT. But, let's change the entire system for those few.......right....makes a whole hell of a lot of sense....and put our country even MORE in debt than it already is......

It is true alot of people want Health Care Reform! But that does not mean they want to throw away what they have, more reading of Obamas Plan needs to be done.
He says it's not for the illegals ,yet this Bill has alot of added junk, like making the illegals citizens at a stroke of a pen. Wow.That means HC for those who were illegal and have put nothing into this Country. Except their cheap, cheap labor.

Look at the ones working for Verizon, digging up all the yards to put FIOS lines in,they don't know how to dig and save the rest of the yard.

Any of you seeing them digging needs to get out and talk to them! Almost all can't speak English and don't understand English.

We are losing jobs everyday to cheap labor.

It needs to stop.

@ ...I'm Just Saying

Most DO NOT SUPPORT healthcare reform, you are sorely mistaken! Additionally, McDonnell has stated that Virginia will OPT OUT of the Dems healthcare plan...

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 45% now favor the health care plan proposed by President Obama and congressional Democrats. Most (52%) remain opposed.

Only 25% Strongly Support the plan while 42% are Strongly Opposed.

The problem with illegal immigration is that the Chamber of COmmerce crowd likes the cheap labor, and the Democrats and Catholic church like more voters and members. The only people on the outside looking in are the American citizens, both born here and come here (legally), who can't find a voice in either party. Figure out a reliable way to keep these folks from getting jobs (e-Verify and big first time fines for all their employers) and the magnet that brings the illegals here -- big bucks compared to home country wages -- will stop working.
I think the term is enforcement by attrition....

I didn't really like Keith Fimian last time, but I held my nose and voted for him because he isn't Gerry Connolly. I'll vote for him again because he isn't Gerry Connolly, but I wish the Republicans would run a more appealing candidate.

For Gerry Connolly, the Fairfax County board chairman, denouncing illegal immigration hawks to the south was a safe prospect in the heavily Democratic suburb. But since rising to Congress, in an 11th District that dips into the more conservative Prince William County , the freshman Democrat has toughened his rhetoric on the subject.

Connolly has staked out a position as a proponent of health care reform whose support falls short of allowing illegal immigrants access to expanded government programs. He told the Hill newspaper, "I have to be able to reassure my constituents that those who are here illegally cannot avail themselves of the provisions provided in this health care bill."

The stance puts Connolly at odds with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and the most liberal wing of his own party. But taking a more permissive tack would present more difficulties among a constituency that has elected some of Virginia 's most bellicose anti-illegal-immigrant leaders in recent years, including Prince William County Board of Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart. Connolly and Stewart frequently sniped at each other as board chairmen over the other county's illegal-immigration policies.

Tuesday's election signaled that the 11th District, once thought to be shifting blue, is still heavily disputed territory. While the district broke for Barack Obama over John McCain 57 to 42 percent in last year's presidential election, it swung back in this year's governor's race to support Republican Bob McDonnell over Democrat Creigh Deeds by 11 points.

Connolly is one of several freshman Democratic congressmen in Virginia with the GOP's target sign on their backs for the 2010 midterm elections, and his vote on the massive health care bill in front of Congress will be closely watched.

His stance -- that those in the country illegally shouldn't have access to national health programs -- is "consistent with the way most folks I talk to feel about the issue," said Prince William County Supervisor Marty Nohe, a Republican who represents the Coles District .

"And that's both individuals who have taken a very tough anti-illegal immigration position, and those who have taken a more open position to how immigration should be handled," Nohe said.
