"Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart."
Obama won't cover his heart because that would insinuate that he actually has one.

As for bowing to the Japanese emperor, at least THIS time he could more easily claim it was because the man was so much shorter than him.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/04/09/obama-bow-to-saudis-cnn-r_n_185281.html

Seriously, how hard is it to hire a cultural attache that might give you some insight as to the proper greeting protocol for other heads of state, etc? We're paying more than enough taxes to cover the salary for someone like that...

Why am I thinking, if you don't BOW DOWN (low) to the Emperor you don't get to see and, better yet, help yourself to the GIANT room FULL OF CASH?

I remember hearing about a Japanese politician who was so corrput (even MORE corrupt that American politicians, if that's possible) he had to wheel his CASH out in TWO shopping carts!

In his defense, it was probably YEN!

Obama is on an official Asian policy tour representing the United States of America.

Barack Obama - private citizen on his own time and dime - can slither around on his belly barking like a seal for all I care.

Why is the son of Hirohito smiling? The POTUS just surrendered.

BTW, obama has done nothing to cut the debt or the deficite and in fact it has surged since he has been in office. And, he keeps spending. Wait until the health care bill kicks in, and amnesty, and cap and trade, etc.

Independant,

What is getting to people, is obama has not had any problems bashing America while overseas. He is doing this because he believes it and because of the far left on his own party, who see a weaker America being better for the World. Do you see any foreign leaders coming here and bashing their own Countries? Of course not.

He sees America as an equal with the rest of the World. We are not equal with the rest of the World. There a reason why millions have come here and not gone to places like China, India, etc. Yet, obama sees it as his duty to bash us.

Add his bow to the King of Saudia Arabia, his goofy gifts to Foreign Head of States, obama simply is over his head as President.

Well, no kidding, Independent! You've finally reached an all time low....so it's
Bush's fault that Obama's bad manners give the entire world a good laugh!
Most of us realize that Obama is a product of Chicago thuggery and ergo, not
much class is expected, so try backing off of Bush for a while.

Before the “flaming” begins, I should add that the Emperor of Japan is regarded as a Deity of diving origins and is the head of the Shinto religion. Bowing to him as a sign of respect is analogous to a President kneeling for a blessing from the Pope or the Archbishop of Canterbury. Does anyone object to that?

The people of Japan (like I said, I lived there for seven years) will truly respect our President for recognizing the “Mikado’s” role in their society and showing proper respect (I'm sure the State Department briefed him on the appropriate protocol for this religious figure).

These "out of context" moments don't really add anything to a discussions about Obama's policys (some which I agree with, some which I don't).

The Question (responding to Any questions...) is why do we object to our President being polite in a foreign country?

Agree with CharacterCountsKris. I lived in Japan for seven years. I find a transition from our "traditional" arrogance and lack of humility to one of mutual respect (you will notice the Emperor is shaking the President's hand) to be the right Diplomatic track. While neocons live in our past glory, realists realize that we are really nothing more than a declining debtor nation mired in two wars of dubious origens and beholding to foreign powers such as China, Japan, the EU, and emerging markets for our future. They loan us the money to keep us afloat in spite of our historic national debt (thanks to Bush's inept fiscal policies and failure to regulate the Financial industry) and have the markets to help us survive (since we depend on foreign exports for what we grow and make). If they ever cut us off or decide to dump dollars in favor of the Euro (I assume you know the value of the $ these days - again, thanks to Bush), we're "toast".

Yes, I’m expecting to get “flamed” rather than receive any rational responses. Adjusting to our new position in the world order is harder on some more than others. I rather like the fact that the rest of the world is starting to respect us as principled people once again.

I lived in Japan for 2 years and worked at the Japanese embassy in D.C. for 4 years. The Japanese will LOVE this - they will really feel deeply honored by this obsequious bow from a president of the United States. It also unfortunately implies that the U.S. and Japan are not PARTNERS in the world. Sad to say, but it may by ever-increasing degrees reflect the true nature of our deepening dependence on foreign money.
