Cops Nab Naked Flasher

By Greg L | 7 December 2009 | Crime, Manassas City | 17 Comments

Some of our newer residents don’t benefit from growing up as part of American society and miss out on some important cultural lessons, to their detriment.  Take for example the case of Artemio Rojas Sanchez, who decided that of all the places he could choose to remove his clothing and expose himself to customers sitting inside a restaurant, a doughnut shop would be best. For not considering that a place like this just might be a magnet for police officers, Mr. Sanchez gets our “dumb criminal of the month” award.

For some strange reason I cannot fathom, indecent exposure has been pretty common crime of late.  Not all the perpetrators who have been caught belong to the same demographic group as Mr. Sanchez, and we have no idea of Mr. Sanchez’s citizenship or immigration status, but a substantial number of these crimes appear to have been committed by persons who comprise our immigrant community, of whom about half are illegal aliens according to the Commonwealth Coalition.  Whether sex crimes like these are more commonplace in Central and South America I don’t know, but a disturbing proportion of these kinds of crimes committed in our community result in the arrest of someone who needs a translator in court.

It’s a strange and twisted values system that sometimes makes indecent exposure somehow “macho.”   I can grasp how a third world culture might think it’s acceptable for adult men to have thirteen year-old girlfriends, leading to arrests for statutory rape in this culture where such practice is revolting and unlawful.  I can even understand how some of these cultures can have vastly different standards regarding domestic abuse that shock and upset us when demonstrated here.  The cultural artifacts of the newly arrived are going to manifest themselves, sometimes in unfortunate ways, and all we can really do is hope the assimilation process is speedy for those who will stay, and the revolving door moves quickly for those who don’t and will return to their home countries.

But the whole exposing yourself to strangers thing I will never be able to understand at any level other than as a manifestation of mental illness.  I feel rather relieved when the police nab these sickos, as who knows what else they may contemplate doing.  I remain unsettled though, as the several cases a month we’ve been seeing of late defy understanding, and that makes it rather difficult to figure out how to reduce the incidence of this kind of crime.

Correct me if I am wrong but even if this beanie weenie was illegal under the new 287G isn’t indecent exposure not a crime that status can be checked?

He would have faired better if he had “the urge” to remove his clothing in Montgomery County, Maryland. They tolarate this kind of behavior and there the police cannot take any action unless a supervisor approves it. To all of his ilk, GO NORTH, YOUNG MEN, GO NORTH!

G Man, they could still be placed under an immigration detainer, but they would be removed on a “priority basis.” If ICE feels they’re too busy, they wouldn’t pick this guy up. If they have the space and the time, they would.

So, Greg, are you saying that if he got naked outside (say) a Taco Bell they’d STILL be looking for him?

    Kevin,

Chances are, yes. It took cops about a month to nab the last flasher, someone who wasn’t conveniently lurking pant-less in front of a place that specialized in serving doughnuts and coffee.

Looks like the Montgomery County MD. police are getting fed up with being handcuffed by PC:

The headline was weak. If the flasher was naked, he would not be wearing anything to flash; conversely, as a flasher, he would be wearing an overcoart or something long enough to conceal his “wears” prior to flashing. (Just a technical point.)
