Mr. Way,

The way some of our elected officials are acting these days, is clear they could care less about reason.

I support the second amendment whole heartedly and am an NRA member with a cc for many years. Nonetheless, government by intimidation rather than by reason is seriously unhealthy for the republic. Your references to "facing a group of armed voters" and carrying arms to "discourage doublespeak" just give fodder to the gun control lobby.

Mr. Way is entitled to his opinion. But I think a politician might be less apt to sling bull hockey if he were facing a group of armed voters.

Mr. Way,

I was at one of the largest attended Council meetings in recent years after some members of the City police department had insulted law abiding citizens who were exercising their right to carry. At that meeting there were dozens of people who opened carried and many who cc'ed. There was not a single incident and in fact, I believe the Mayor made a comment the speakers and the crowd in general was well mannered.

Those people who do not support the Bill of Rights do not need an excuse to go after our rights, they simply do not want gun ownership and that is enough of a reason for them.

Thomas Jefferson said the following.....

"When governments fear the people there is liberty. When the people fear the government there is tyranny." And, "The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government."

Was there any talk how the academic standards adopted by the Common Core State Standards Initiative will be integrated into the Virginia Standards of Learning? The state is required to adopt at least 85% of the standards developed by this group, which are due out shortly, and to my knowledge the state has yet to announce the process by which those standards will be selected and implemented in state public schools.

I agree with Old Soldier, I just can't understand the lack of notice and that this was up against a PWC Board meeting. I learned of the meeting today and I try to be informed. How many people were there?

To Mr. Walter E. Kurtz

Your suggestion that attendees at public meetings should "open carry" is dangerous, juvenile, and precisely the kind of statement which anti-gun advocates can use to demonstrate their perceived need to restrict gun carry. Shame on you.

Thanks. IMO that's an easy one, but I'm sure some of the libs in the GA will try to derail the passage.

Yes there was. Tom Whitmore read the text of a proposed resolution, and at least one other speaker mentioned it as well.

Was there any talk regarding creating a bill that would confirm State rights under the 10th Amendment? I know a few other States have passed such bills. I don't believe the bills hold much power, but they do confirm the intent of the Amendment.

Scheduling the town hall meeting the same night as a BOCS meeting (published much further in advance) was not really an example of good planning. The folks inclined to go to such events had to chose... a pity.

It was probably the best-attended meeting of this kind ever held. Although there were the usual people from government agencies and government-funded programs that wasted time by coming up to "inform" our elected officials what they do with our tax money, a number of citizens spoke, and some were rather interesting.

Bit topics of the night included health care reform, illegal immigration, protecting life, and allowing localities to lower the speed limit in designated residential areas. There was a definite "tea party" feel to the crowd and quite a bit of hostility towards the federal government on display. Bob Marshall in particular was very comfortable in such a venue, but George Barker at times looked as comfortable a cat in a dog kennel.

Colgan seemed off his game last night. Maybe he wasn't feeling well.

Anyone go? Anyone suggest legislation that the politicos did not give a dozen reasons why it could not be enacted? Any of them accept responsibility or was it just, "That's City Council's/BOCS' job," or "That's the federal government's job, better call Frank Wolf?"

It should be required that anyone who attends one of these "Duck and Cover" sessions open carry, just to discourage doublespeak.

By Greg L, "Not much advance notice..."

It's a GOOD thing we don't have to rely on the News-Messenger for advance notice of meetings like these.

NO notice AT ALL and the meeting is TONIGHT !

I SHOULD say we're LUCKY we don't have to rely on them.
