Howie Lind Rides To The Rescue!

By Greg L | 17 January 2010 | RPV | 17 Comments

The Tenth Congressional District is rumored to have a call issued for a convention at which time a District Chairman will be elected pursuant to the requirements of the Party Plan.  Also rumored, because once again under the leadership of Jim Rich the call cannot actually be found anywhere, the filing deadline for candidates for District Chairman is January 25th.  Just as happened with the last two convention calls in the 10th Congressional District, no one other than Jim Rich’s insider team actually know what’s going on or have any clear understanding of the filing requirements for delegates or candidates for Chairman.  Nevertheless, longtime State Central member Howie Lind has announced he intends to contest Jim Rich for the Chairman’s position.

Thank the Lord, and pass the ammunition!

Howie Lind has an absolutely stellar reputation as a fair dealer during his tenure on the State Central Committee, someone who values transparency and strict adherence to established procedure, and clearly understands that grassroots Republicans do not appreciate when party leaders attempt to hijack any process in order to engineer a predetermined outcome, no matter what that outcome may be.  Lind’s solid credentials and long-demonstrated integrity make him a tremendous pick for this position no matter who else might be running.

Lind is light-years superior to the tyrannical Jim Rich, an utterly ineffective Chairman who has done nothing other than to cling to the trappings of power this position holds.  The Tenth District Committee is a meaningless organization, completely invisible in the political world, unable to command grassroots volunteers for any task, unable to coordinate any activity, and entirely ineffective at supporting the interests of local unit committees within the District.  When the Manassas Park Committee essentially folded as an entity, it was nearly a year before Jim Rich did anything while the Manassas City Committee was publishing their calls and doing their business for them.  The Park has gotten no support from the 10th District since being reorganized, having received barely more than an attitude of neglect from the 10th District in a way that is anything but benign.  Other local units have experienced pretty much the same thing.  If there’s been a 10th District out there, it has done precious little other than support Jim Rich.

What the 10th District is fabulous for is re-writing meeting minutes after they’ve been adopted, keeping committee members in the dark about what the committee is actually doing, violating the Party Plan, and engineering some of the most ridiculous convention shenanigans ever seen.  The 2008 convention actually ran pretty smoothly because no one bothered to challenge Jim Rich, but the previous one became instantly famous for lowering the bar for fairness and adherence to rules below what anyone ever thought possible only because Jim Rich faced opposition.

We’ve not only got a great opportunity to clean up the huge mess in the 10th District, but put in place leadership that merits the position regardless of the horrors of Jim Rich’s past abuse.  Howie Lind is a fantastic choice for 10th District Chairman and deserves the support of every Republican who despises Politburo politics.

UPDATE: Lind has sent out this email to local Republicans:

Dear Friends,

Today, I am formally announcing that I will be a candidate for Chairman of the Republican Party for the 10th Congressional District. The election of your new Chairman will take place on May 22 at the 10th District Convention. My goal as your 10th District Chairman is simple:

Paint the 10th Red!

In making this decision, I was reminded that each of us has a responsibility as a Virginian
and as an American to do our part to preserve and protect what has been handed down to us. In 1980, Ronald Reagan famously asked American’s a question which resonates as
much today as it did then: “If not us, who? If not now, when?”

I believe, as I know so many of you do, that history is once again calling us to a great struggle - for the very soul of our nation. Our Virginia and American heritage is under siege. Our traditions and founding ideals are under relentless assault. Today’s cultural and political “elites” seem determined to destroy everything that has made our nation the envy of the world and are putting our national security at risk. They see themselves as a permanent “ruling class,” who view those of us who stand on the Constitutional bedrock
of life, liberty and property as radicals. When we gather to protest, and petition our Government, we’re called even worse!

The profound challenge of our time has simply come down to this:

What kind of America will we have within the next decade?

Will our great nation be ruled by a constitutionally restrained limited government? Or will we ruled by nameless bureaucrats and a political ruling class, who “decide” what is best for us both as a society, and individually. The choice is now that stark; the line that clear.

Who will stand on which side of that line is now the only question unanswered.

In Virginia, we have been blessed with fair winds. The huge victory of our Republican ticket and my longtime friends, Bob McDonnell, Bill Bolling and Ken Cuccinelli sends a loud message to the other side. But it is only the first political blood drawn, as many more battles loom in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

We must make sure that the Party and its functions are being led by aggressive and dedicated conservatives whose sole determination is to find, field, and support the best candidates possible - candidates who share the views of the voters of the 10th District and the Commonwealth. While doing this, we must also bring our Party into the 21st century.

You and I must take personal responsibility for our Party, and our future.

The Republican Party of Virginia is uniquely placed in political history and geography to impact the future of our nation, and I would be honored to lead the 10th as part of that expression. If I prevail in this contest, these would be my goals for the next two years as the Chairman of the 10th Congressional GOP:

* Develop and maintain a GOP “scorecard” on every political jurisdiction in the 10th Congressional District. This “scorecard” would list every single elective office holder at every level of government. School Boards. Town, City and County Councils. City and County Treasurers. Board of Supervisors. City and County Attorneys. State Delegates and Senators, and of course re-electing our sitting Congressman, Frank Wolf.

* Develop a team that works with every Unit Chairman and other leaders to scour every inch of the 10th Congressional District, recruiting viable candidates. No office should go unchallenged. No Democrat should feel safe. Our goal will be nothing less than painting the 10th Red!

* Transform our Party into a public voice that educates voters in the critical issues of the day. Many traditional principles that you and I hold deeply, no longer have the same meaning, or definition, in the public dialogue. It simply is not enough anymore that we say we support a specific principle, if we can’t inform voters as to how a concept intersects with their own interest, or how it impacts their life and their family.

* Make our Party genuinely open to all, and respectful of real debate. A party of ideas, whose collective voice echoes the traditional, yet embraces the functional. A Party that never retreats from foundational Constitutional precepts, and always advances policy that reflects them. Above all, we must be a party that honors the wisdom and common sense of the average voter in what we say and do. Part of that process will be to renew the strong connections that the Party has traditionally had with core constituency groups. We can’t win elections if our natural base and affinity groups are not engaged in the election process.

* Raise money year round, not just in election years. Develop and maintain the funding necessary for effective Party operations every month of every year.

* Develop various methods and forums for discussing, distributing and educating the voting public on the principles of life, liberty and property, and maintaining a strong national security posture, and how those concepts work themselves out in public policy.

* Chair 10th District Committee meetings and business in a fair, open and equitable manner that would insure every voice is heard.

* Produce and make available on-line meeting minutes, financial documents, operating budget’s and expense issues, so that the every Party member in 10th District has full access to their Party’s business.

* Properly and fairly represent the Party membership of the 10th District on the Executive Committee of the Republican Party of Virginia.

Dear friend, I need your support. In my 20 year Navy career, my service in the Bush Administration, and my long service to the 10th District in various capacities, including my 2003 State Senate campaign, and my 2008 election as one of your current State Central Committee members, I have learned that the power that we have over our future is limited only by our actions today. Will you join me?

If so, email me and tell me that, yes, you are going to support me for Chairman. Then, mark your calendar for May 22, 2010, the date of the 10th District Convention to beheld at Fauquier High School in Warrenton, Va. The primary business of this convention is to elect the new Chairman. You will need to be registered as a delegate with your local GOP committee, and attend the convention in person to vote. My campaign team will provide you with everything you will need to register.

Please pledge your support for me today. Mark your calendar. Of course, any type of election requires funding, and your financial support is essential and encouraged.

Let’s get ready to paint the 10th Red!

I’ve seen Howie Lind in action for years, and he’s a great guy with a solid record. I’m thrilled he’s running for this office and no doubt that he will do a fine job!

“County Treasurers”–Counties dont have treasurers, only cities have that elected position. Except Arlington which isnt technically a city or county, it has a hybrid charter.

Its just a technicality but i think its important to know what you’re talking about when running for office.

And counties dont have councils either, they have Boards of Supervisors, which are already mentioned.

Again, technicality but precision is necessary.

I served with Howie Lind and you will not find a more decent fellow. It is a shame that he is still working for the Party that condones torture and the jailing of US Citizens, without charges or trial.

However, here in Virginia, most of us still try to maintain a sense of civility among the partisan factions, regardless of the atrocities committed by the former regime, or real or perceived affronts made by the current HNIC.

As a Democrat, I would enjoy competing with the Republican side led by Howie Lind as Tenth District Chairman. I believe that contests, both inside the Party and in general elections will be fought fairly and contested on the issues. Howie will be especially effective in recruiting quality candidates, something the Republicans sorely need right now.

With some luck, Howie will come to his senses and realize that the Republican Party is merely a function of the multinational corporations, whose purpose is to make Americans corporate serfs; but until then, it will be helpful to at least have a few honest men like Howie in a leadership role with the Virginia subsidiary of the corporate-owned Republican Party.

Yes, Counties do have treasurers, and it is an elected position until a referendum is passed to make it an appointed position. The same applies to cities.

Spotsylvania is one county that I know for a FACT has an elected treasurer. You can google “Larry K. Pritchett” and “SBE” to confirm that.

Counties may or may not have elected treasurers and commissioners of the revenue. It depends on the form of County Government is utilized, County Administrator or County Executive.

    The Constitution of Virginia says:

Section 4. County and city officers.

There shall be elected by the qualified voters of each county and city a treasurer, a sheriff, an attorney for the Commonwealth, a clerk, who shall be clerk of the court in the office of which deeds are recorded, and a commissioner of revenue. The duties and compensation of such officers shall be prescribed by general law or special act.

Regular elections for such officers shall be held on Tuesday after the first Monday in November. Such officers shall take office on the first day of the following January unless otherwise provided by law and shall hold their respective offices for the term of four years, except that the clerk shall hold office for eight years.

The General Assembly may provide for county or city officers or methods of their selection, including permission for two or more units of government to share the officers required by this section, without regard to the provisions of this section, either (1) by general law to become effective in any county or city when submitted to the qualified voters thereof in an election held for such purpose and approved by a majority of those voting thereon in each such county or city, or (2) by special act upon the request, made after such an election, of each county or city affected. No such law shall reduce the term of any person holding an office at the time the election is held. A county or city not required to have or to elect such officers prior to the effective date of this Constitution shall not be so required by this section.

The General Assembly may provide by general law or special act for additional officers and for the terms of their office.

For the decades that Howie Lind was serving our nation in the U.S. Navy, he developed a reputation as someone who always spoke the truth to those in power. He also was someone who both seniors and peers would go to when they needed clear, accurate assessments of solutions to the challenges that were ahead; whether discussing key staffing decisions or enterprise-wide system revisions, Howie Lind was always the Man who was relied upon for well reasoned advice.

When Howie Lind targeted his extensive experience to help the Republican Party of Virginia, he quickly became a force for re-energizing Party adherents and attracting throngs of young professionals into the ranks of supporters.

Howie Lind has always been a voice for fairness and honest campaigns; he and Men like him, are the best hope for the Republican side to be successful in a changing Virginia.

With Howie Lind’s extensive record of integrity and fair dealing with competing factions, one can easily see why he is seen as such a threat to the backroom dealers of the, “old guard” and those who will sacrifice all of the Party’s principles with the hope of clinging to power.

Howie Lind will move the Republican Party into the Twenty-first Century. It is time to move forward and it is well past time for a change of leadership in the Tenth District.

That “Loudmouthed Inciter” AKA Jeff Wolinski is such a mindless myrmidon for Jim Rich is reason enough alone to consider Lind’s candidacy. I no longer reside in the Tenth (it was moved out from under me), but being present at Jim Rich’s smear of RPV Chairman Pat McSweeney and six years under his rule as 10th District Chairman is enough to convince me that he should not only be ousted as a District Chairman, but that he shouldn’t be allowed in the company of decent and honest people.

This is an absolute lie and I am disappointed that no conservative has called him out this cheap shot so far.

After finding out that he supported Jeff Frederick, he lost my support. Jim Rich might not run things ‘fairly’ (of course those in the minority typically complain that they’re not being treated fairly) but at least he had sense enough to vote out the guy that tried to split the party in half.

Of course I’m not in the 10th so I dont get to vote either way :(

As an elected member of the 10th District State Central Committee and a Christian woman who has been a volunteer for the Republican Party since the age of 18, I can attest to the integrity/decency/and principled leadership of Howie Lind. He has helped many candidates get elected, and is constantly working to promote fairness and good leadership. Having Howie Lind as our 10th District Chair will be a blessing.

Local gop said “After finding out he supported Jeff Frederick, he lost my support.”

Jeff Frederick was hijacked from his sitting and elected chairmanship. The delegation for Jeff Frederick had their time and money stolen from them by the RPV.

Let’s let the people choose. Should we prepare for another ousting IF Jim Rich doesn’t legitimately win?

There is a difference between bedrock values that unites us, and what jeff frederick stood for. In his perfect world we would all be ideologue clones that believed the same things and fell in lock step with him. What Bob is talking about is that we are all conservatives in one way or another. We might not all argee 100% on everything, but we agree 80/20 and we need to stop fighting eachother over that 20% we differ on. J-Fed failed miserably to understand that and almost cause a split in the party. He failed to understand that and thus was a bad leader. Leaders find common ground, compromise if necessary to keep their organizations together. Jeff Frederick failed in that respect on multiple levels. I dont think someone that thinks he did a good job is qualified to lead a large and dynamic organization like a DC.
