Chief Deane To Retire In May?

By Greg L | 6 April 2010 | Illegal Aliens, Prince William County | 45 Comments

Breaking:

Rumors are swirling that Prince William County Police Chief Charlie Deane is telling folks that he intends to retire in May.  If this is true, that might be the deadline for the next outrush of illegal aliens from Prince William County.  No one likely to be hired to replace Deane could be as accommodating to the needs of illegal aliens as Deane was, and it’s quite possible we could get someone hired into that position that will actually have a strong interest in ensuring the law is enforced.

Stay tuned…

Don’t rejoice too much just yet, Greg. He might hang on just to spite you. Anyway, having someone who would enforce the law and actually charge the denizens of the boarding housing who violate the noise ordinance continuously (see the previous open thread) would be welcome. Does Corey have anything to do with the choice of the next police chief? I don’t trust him after he got Peacor hired. If Corey and Peacor choose the next police chief, we might end up worse off than with Deane.

local gop, you are again misinformed.

The closest thing to what you’re talking about was in 2004 or 2005 on the Route 1 corridor where about 30 illegals were charged with loitering and about half were turned over to ICE. After that incident Deane met with Mexicans Without Borders and then issued a policy that prevented police officers from asking about legal status except in cases of a felony violation. The discovery of that secret policy (we tried several times to get it released and even had to threaten a lawsuit) is what lead to the Rule of Law Resolution being proposed.

Since the Rule of Law Resolution was adopted, Deane has yet to sweep any area for violators. He has consistently done as little as possible.

Like I said earlier, look at the DOG we got stuck with for County Executive !!!

What kind of statement does it make about PWC leadership when the “individual” who helped hide the fact that the Director of Public works (Bob Wilson, now retired) was a SEXUAL PREDATOR who used his position, and his Discretionary Hiring Perk to PREY on ambitious, naive young men ???

It was practically common knowledge that spending a weekend at his house in Maryland GUARANTEED a position or, better yet, promotion !!!

Again, as I have said before, I believe the only reason she got the job is because she KNOWS where all the BODIES are buried !!!

In any event, before you jump for joy, check and see who’s next in line for Chief because he or she will, no doubt, use the SAME tactic !!!

The BOCS will put on another DOG and PONY SHOW, spend a small fortune shopping around the country for a replacement then declare that it, “Makes perfect sense” to promote from within, the SAME way they did with Pecor !!!

We should encourage the BOCS to recruit from outside the PWC Police Department for Dean’s replacement.

We have much to be proud of in our PWC Police Department - but senior leadership is not in that category. Our individual police officers are outstanding - but they labor under senior leaders who expect selective enforcement as a norm at the expense of the law. Dean was there too long and his approach to mentoring and shaping his department’s senior leadership will not provide adequate leadership transition.

Dean’s foot dragging on the illegal alien issue will only be replicated by his senior officers. Claiming “good community relations” is a substitute for enforcing the law is not acceptable. The officers patrolling our streets recognize the problem and the criminals. We need a chief who encourages pro-active policing - instead of encouraging patrol cars to drive past groups of illegals.

And finally, we need a chief who is not afraid of a regional or national reputation for busting illegal aliens. Since Sheriff Joe Arpaio already has a job - perhaps we can hire one of his senior officers to get the job done in Prince William County!

What if MS13, Mexicans Without Borders, and the Zapatistas no longer felt comfortable in Prince William County? That would certainly mean Chief Dean had moved on.

Lot of one issue venom spate here today. That is too bad because the PWC men in blue deserve better. Chief Dean has been the consumate professional, recognized nationally. All of our statistics stand against any other area of similar size. A lot of changes to PWC since he came on board and I think he has led the County through those changes - to include a federal failure to control immigration over the last several years - with considerable grace. I did not agree with his reluctance to enforce immigration policy, but I understood his concern for the county’s reputation, his men, the victims that he felt would fear the police and the need to move into this new policy slowly and effectively. In this regard the best thing you can say about the Chief was that he was not a political tool. When a multi-pronged attack is needed to solve a problem, it really does not make sense to put all the blame on a single prong. There are plenty of big boys - bigger boys - that need to carry more of that weight and your venom.

All the problems associated with illegal immigration cannot reasonably be the fault of one person. Very true. Immigration is a federal issue that was facilitated by Democrats and Republicans equally.

By now, I’m sure the author of this ’story’ has figured out this ‘rumor’ is inocrrect.

When you truly are responsibile and are not a mere armchair quarterback, moving slowly, reasonably and (ahem) collecting FACTS are required.

Armchairs don’t need to concern themselves with the responsibilty of hundreds of people or the impact of rash judgements to real lives. They can say the easy stuff. Over and over again. Chief Deane has the respect and confidence of more people than he doesn’t. That is very clear.

No reason to do a county-wide poll. Just administer a poll inside the walls of his own police department in order to judge morale. The view from law enforcement officers of Deane as a leader is the most important opinion in the county. You would probably find the senior staff in favor, and the rest of the department opposed.

Talk about an “armchair” quarterback CONTRADICTING
    himself/herself !!!!

I don’t suppose you’d care to provide the “FACTS” (that apparently only YOU have) to back up your last statement ??!!??

It REALLY is amazing how someone can refer to “FACTS,” in some misguided attempt to sound authoritative, then CONJURE UP, out of THIN AIR, a statement that is, according to this “FACT” checker’s OVERACTIVE imagination, “Very clear.”

    *** *** *** ***

On another note, I still see people celebrating MUCH too soon in reference to Dean’s departure.

I’m not all that familiar with Dean (aside from the FACT that he’d prefer to do NOTHING about ILLEGALS) but nothing would make me happier than to see “Go With the FLOW” Glendell Hill run out of town on a RAIL !!!!

I know for a FACT (based on EXPERIENCE) that he is, like Paul F. (for FU**STER) Nichols, nothing but a LIAR and a THIEF !!!!!

Another one who not only helped cover up the FACT that THREE DOLLAR Bob Wilson, former PWC Director of Public Works, was nothing but a HOMO-SEXUAL PREDATOR, but was actually OFFENDED when I tried to expose that FACT (for the record, I have that ON TAPE in case anyone cares to dispute it) !!!

How Wilson was never investigated for his behavior when in “power” is a TOTAL MYSTERY to me, not to mention a STATEMENT about the people “running” this county !!!

I guess, in Prince William County, it’s easier for politicians to TURN a BLIND EYE than it is to deal with the (oh so messy) TRUTH ??!!??!!

Which EXPLAINS, very clearly (to quote benton), why Melissa Peacor is our new County Executive !!!

This is true of almost the entire Prince William County government. The vast majority of County employees, both police and civilian, are fine people who want to serve our community. The problem lies in senior management in the County Executive’s Office, and the senior staff in other parts of the government. Namely, in Planning, Griffin and Utz, in Public Works, Bruun and in HR, Fitzwater. I’m sure there are others as well. Gerhart assembled this rogue’s gallery as a group loyal to him rather than the citizens and taxpayers of Prince William County. The only office cleaned out of Gerhart’s cronies so far is OIT.

I’m still in shock that Corey Stewart railroaded Gerhart’s right-hand henchman, Melissa Peacor, through as County Executive. Off-the-record, other Supervisors and people on their staffs are expressing their displeasure with this stunt and saying that they preferred not to hire Peacor. Senior management in the PWC government needs to be fired rather than promoted. Remember - we have an election coming up in 2011!

JTF- would strongly agree that senior mgmt in PWC needs to be freshened up. I’ve also heard from senior staff and others also off the record that the second in command is not always in total agreement with number one and that is becoming more and more obvious with the CXO pick as weeks go by.

Of the 499 views to date - only 10 or so have expressed displeasure with the Chief. There’s a fact. CVS still out?

Benton - In my view, Deane is not the worst of the lot. I don’t see him as being corrupt as are many of the others (see my list above); only as enforcing the laws based on his own personal priorities rather than those of the community. I understand that law enforcement resources are limited and choices must be made. However, he needs to listen more to the citizens he serves. See my earlier posts on his policy regarding non-enforcement of the noise ordinance.

Your post was a bit cryptic. By second in command do you mean Peacor and first in command Stewart? I was among many who tried to point out what a disaster Peacor would be. Corey could disown Gerhart because he inherited him, but he owns Peacor now. She wouldn’t have the job without what he did for her.

Contrary to the few naysayers on here once Chief Deane and Sheriff Hill do retire they will do so with the respect and admiration of the VAST majority of the men and women who work/worked for them. Will one hundred percent of the men and women be happy? Of course not, no boss will ever make everyone happy but usually the unhappy ones are the ones with issues anyway. I worked with Deane for 30 years and know for a fact he is a man of honor. I’ve seen him cry at the death of one of his officers and even tear up talking at the memorial of a K9 killed in the line of duty.
I know many are not happy about the illegal immigration issue but it’s not as simple an issue to handle as many of you think.

FormerOfficer makes some good points and I want to emphasize that my view of Deane is much higher than of the corrupt Gerhart cronies still in place in the County government.

The only time I feel real animosity toward Chief Deane is when I’m woke up at 4:00 AM or can’t enjoy a quiet weekend day in my own home because of noise from the boarding houses and the vehicles their denizens drive only to be told that the PWC PD’s policy is essentially not to enforce the noise ordinance.

To repeat, their policy is that officers must visit the same address and witness the same offense three times in the same day before they will charge the perps with anything. Come on, let’s quit wasting the officers’ and dispatchers’ time, and elevate the quality of life in PWC. One warning for noise and the next call results in an arrest whether it’s later the same day or the next year.

Formerofficer, If we can get a new chief who wants to enforce the law, in a few years everyone will be saying Deane who? And if we can elect a sheriff who “wants” to work and not add 50% to the budget every five years the people will be much happier.

Former Officer, give me a break. After being Deane’s puppet for 30 years you finally retired. Spare me, Deane is an a** who could give a s**t about his street level officers. Since you are a 30 yr. retiree you would have to have been a high enough rank to be one of Deane’s boys so go blow your Deane smoke somewhere else. The street officer will be the lucky ones if he steps down, then they can be real cops without being handcuffed by him.

Cynic - filing a lawsuit is a good idea but I don’t have the time or money to do that. The powers-that-be know that this is true of the vast majority of citizens. The BOCS can force the Police Department to change their policy - they control the purse strings. However, as the BOCS has become much more developer-friendly over the past year with the industry doling out large contributions I don’t see them doing anything. Look at the policies of the Chamber and all of the developer associations. They don’t want local government to challenge their supply of cheap, illegal labor.

I’m adding this to my list of issues for 2011. Our best chance for reform is a new BOCS that represents us rather than Mike Lubeley, the builders associations and the Chamber of Commerce.
