PWCPS Folds, Citizens Win

By Greg L | 21 April 2010 | Prince William County | 11 Comments

After a discussion during closed session, no less, the Prince William County School Board decided to withdraw their appeal of the planning commission’s rejection of their attempt to locate an elementary school on the site of Stonewall Middle School.  Board member Don Richardson and Superintendent Steve Walts in particular didn’t seem upbeat at all as they entered the board chambers after that meeting and Richardson had to explain (in a fashion) that they’re pulling back.  Plenty in the audience this evening clearly were, though.

This episode ranks right up there as one of the most poorly mishandled initiatives the School Board has ever engaged in.  They’ve really upset a lot of people, demonstrated a tin political ear that is certain to draw opponents in the next elections, and have a wide swath of newly political constituents on hair-trigger alert for the next shenanigan that is certain to come down the pike.  If manufacturing enemies was an art form, these folks are becoming masters.

I daresay these folks intend to make the current approval ratings of Congress look appealing.  One more of these episodes, and they’ll be in contention.

What happened with Avendale last night? The BOCS is trying to shove this proposed development in the Rural Crescent down our throats just like Obama, Reid and Pelosi did the health care legislation. At the request of the BOCS, the School Board added Avendale to its agenda last night, ostensibly because of a proffer of land for a school site.

Don’t fall for this scam! Prince William County can buy land for school sites much cheaper than the additional tax burdens from Avendale will be. Avendale, a 100 percent residential development, will add at least a half million dollars each year (growing with inflation) in unfunded liabilities for services. Add to that problem additional congestion on the roads from about another 300 houses in the Linton Hall area. The developer is proffering a school site claiming it’s worth a bit over $4 million. That’s the developer’s number and the Planning Office accepted it with no independent appraisal in their recommendation for approval. The land’s true value is far less. The Planning Commission recommended denial of the Avendale rezoning.

We do not need any additional residential rezoning in Prince William County, even if developers and the BOCS are playing the proffer shell game. We need more schools and not more houses. The schools will come much cheaper by building them ourselves rather than falling for scams presented to us by developers and politicians. If the BOCS were really concerned about tax burdens on PWC citizens, they would oppose any additional residential rezonings.

Sure glad the Board changed their minds.
Does make me wonder why the changed. Are they afraid to face the next election?

Well they better be prepared, as they have done to many things and it’s time to make them accountable.

Keep your eye on what they do,watch every move they make.

This is a scam perpetuated by Corey Stewart. Stewart wants to deny our kids access to a good quality public education. He wants large class sizes so that our kids will not grasp the fundamentals of the public education that President Obama wants borne upon our children. Progressive education means tolerance and acceptance of those less fortunate. It means acceptance of gay rights in the same realm of a mom and dad and a pooping baby. It means a woman’s right to abort a fetus that is indeed not a human that will grow up and vote conservative. We need more school locations and more Democrats on the School Board!

Boy, this Ray shows what a pure nut he is everytime he opens his mouth.

It’s amazing that everything is Corey’s fault in his books. Must be that he is a Liberal person and has all these weird ideas.

The School Board has enough Democrates and the free liberal thinking.

There are some on there that does not belong there ,such as the Woodbrige lady. She would have our kids piled 10 feet deep and so what if they didn’t learn. She also can’t stand on her own 2 feet, and has to have a mentor that is really off base.

This next time around we need some good cANDIDATES for School Board.

I just wanted to note that Lisa Bell and Gil Trenum voted against the appeal. At least there are two members of the board who have their heads on straight. The rest need to get their act together before the next election, lest they find their tenure terminated when the voters get their next chance to weigh in.

    Time to go RINO hunting.

    Greg,

Thanks for your comments at the end of the SB meeting. That needed to be said.

I didn’t like that Mr. Johns said it is still a good site for a school. He should try driving down Lomond Drive. Maybe he’ll get a clue.

I appreciate Gil Trenum and Lisa Bell. They like to listen to what their constituents have to say. I hope there will be some good candidates running against the others next election.
