Aveni and Way offered what? A resolution to shut down a PLANNED legally operating business? You people need to get a life, teach your children right from wrong yourself, never depend on the government to take care of you, and if you don't likeit, stay out of it! Also, Charles, City Hall doesn't belong to Delegate Miller, it belongs to the citizens of Manassas. If he wanted a meeting, he should have found his own venue. I have always supported Delegate Miller, but now I will have to rethink that support.

Peter, I absolutely agree much- much more on TV ~ it’s more like one of those funny mom moments trying to answer the kids question about PL ~

What is odd though is the fact that 8 separate signs each that span approx. 4 feet in length and 2 feet in height are not considered signs by the County Zoning office

"The code citations wouldn’t be relevant until the shop opened. What I’m referring to here is something that would permit the occupancy permit or business license to be revoked or suspended."

Greg, I'm just trying to understand your logic. If there is a code that prohibits distribution of obscene material and for the sake of argument let's say that what this business does is distribution of obscene material (for those of you who claim it isn't....amazing how many men have an addiction to porn). Why would the City issue a permit which would allow a code or law to be broken?

That makes no sense. It would almost be the same as DMV issuing a driver's license to an illegal alien....etc.

One should wonder why Jackson's (hijacked) 'town hall' meeting wasn't televised? Is the City Council trying to hide the public opinion of it's citizenry,.. or afraid of being even more embarrassed by worthy ideas brought forth by those in attendance? Were any explanations offered during the open meeting in Council chambers - by the staff, council, or the city Attorney?

A couple of years ago I was leaving Dawson’s on Rt 1 with my 12 year old son as we pulled out he asked me a question that stopped me in my tracks…..”mommy what is personal lubricant” as he pointed to MVC across the way….What should I see???? LARGE neon purple and pink signs hanging from the inside the store lining the window fronts on one of them “PERSONAL LUBRICANT”. The signs were clearly visible from RT 1 and clearly for the purpose of advertising, purposely to draw attention to the store…..however as I was later told by Zoning they are not signs and they are not regulated because they are not attached to the façade or the window itself……..OK sure thing

Hopefully the business going in on Main Street will be a bit more tasteful with its displays and signage

Meanwhile, I already suspected the City Council couldn't do anything about this, and probably didn't WANT to do anything about it.

I'm not sure we even want government to be able to target businesses it decides it doesn't like, when those businesses are lawful business and don't violate zoning or other laws.

What is needed is a citizen's action, to encourage the business to find a more appropriate location. That is what a town hall meeting could have done for us -- and what a public hearing won't. The City Council calling this meeting effectively shut down a meeting that might have been useful.

BTW, the place was packed. The entire hearing room was full, people were in the halls, in chairs all over the foyer, standing room only. We got there at 7pm and couldn't get close to the actual meeting room.

I just got back from City Hall. The City Council essentially took over Jackson Miller's Town hall meeting. He isn't even in the room, he is relegated to the hallway, which is full of people who couldn't fit into the downstairs room.

They have a few ceiling speakers that when I left were way too quiet to hear much of what was going on in the room; I did catch that the attorney said there was little they could do since the business was legal, but if they measured a negative impact and could word a law in a non-discriminatory manner, they might be able to do something -- I guess if every other business shuts down and they turn downtown into a ghetto, that might give them freedom to do something.

Back to the City Council's subterfuge. Even though they scheduled their meeting supposedly in the 2nd floor (according to their TV channel), they are meeting in the same room as Jackson was supposed to meet. And they have a public comment period, which boots Miller.

HOWEVER, they aren't televising the meeting, even though City Council meetings are regularly televised. So apparently they "forgot" to tell the TV people about their meeting, and probably also prevented them from covering the town hall Jackson scheduled.

I guess Jackson should have scheduled his public meeting in a more accomodating place than City Hall.

I may be wrong but many years ago this code section was tried on the business on Mathis Avenue and failed. Many of the videos were confiscated and "viewed" by the City Attorney's Office and from my memory only two were found to have been against the moral community standards. So who decides what is against the community standards and what isn't? Again, is this what we want our government deciding for us. You guys better wake up and think about this before it is to late.

Yes! The free market should be allowed to work. If no one in Manassas buys pornography then this place will go out of business in no time.

Why are so many commenters insisting on a big government solution. You damned commies insist on regulating this small business to death. More and more government is not the answer. Let the free market work.

This entrepeneur is pursuing the American dream. He starts a small business that will employ other Americans and you want the government to close him down just because you don't like his products.

If no one buys his products he will fail. If they do he will succeed. That is the American way.

Or do you only believe in free markets and limited government on a case by case basis?

If you don't stick to your principles then they are not principles. They are just hobbies.

If you object to the location of this legal business, how about suggesting that the mayor and council offer incentives for the proprietor to locate in a more appropriate setting? Maybe tax breaks or parking, or rent subsidies at Potomac Mills, or other giveaways usually reserved for large corporate donators or sports team owners. Remember, this is just an individual small-business owner trying to convince us to buy things that we don't really need. Isn't that what they call the backbone of the American economy?

The big boys get what they want largely through an attitude that suggests they have us by the short hairs. I'd rather do business with someone that truly has the best interests of my short hairs in their mission statement!

This kind of place is similar to a cigar shop. A high pedestrian traffic area is part of the business plan. and both sell products and ideas that a large part of the general population doesn't want to promulgate in our youth. If you're against the adult novelty shop, you must be against a cigar shop as well.

The answer is to decide what choices in life you want to restrict, and then pass those restrictive laws before it becomes an issue. Or you could just develop your child's ability to think and understand.

Either way, a lack of planning on your part should not constitute an emergency on the city leaders' part.

This shall be very interesting. Soon we have signs up in city saying "you now entering no-dildo zone" Then there will be permits for having dildo, like with guns. Concealed dildo permits probably not required, though. Very difficult to enforce.

After fall of Soviet Russia whole country turn into great big porno shop with even naked clowns at childrens circus. What huge mess. Now life expectancy is at 50 years old for men with huge disease problems on top of alcoholism. Country falling apart and may not even exist in three more generations this way.

Sometimes Boris wonder if Americans ever bother to learn what happens in other countries when they do stupid things.

Just got e-mail from Jackson Miller - "his" meeting is slated to
start at 7pm as is the mayor and city council's public meeting
- in the same spot, the Manassas City Council Chambers.

Greg - look at the Manassas City Code:

http://library1.municode.com/default-test/home.htm?infobase=10932&doc_action=whatsnew

DIVISION 3. OBSCENITY AND RELATED OFFENSES, Sec. 78-251 to 78-262, especially the definition of obscenity and laws on distributing obscene material and items seems to be clear-cut to me.
