The UnDemocrats

By Greg L | 23 April 2011 | DPVA | 5 Comments

If my often expressed concerns about the autocratic “leadership” of the Democratic Party aren’t enough to convince people that there aren’t major issues these folks need to address, here’s the perspective of a long-time Democrat activist talking once again about the scorched-earth tactics of the DPVA going on right now:

Ben Tribbett, a longtime Democratic activist, encouraged Hope to run and is now considering entering the race himself. But when Tribbett started talking about running, he said, his business clients started receiving calls from people he described only as Senate leadership.

“It’s fair to say that the tactic the Senate leadership is using to keep me from running is to shut down my business so I don’t have the personal income to run,” Tribbett said.

There’s nothing “democratic” about the Democratic Party of Virginia, and it has been that way for a long time.

Although Republicans like myself might feel inclined to celebrate leadership problems within the DPVA, those problems hurt everyone in Virginia, including us.  A stronger opposition keeps Republicans on their toes, constantly working to develop good policy and ensuring that the best candidates win elections.  Just because someone has an “R” next to their name doesn’t necessarily mean they’re the best person for the job (although they often are) and if DPVA is not as strong as it should be we could have our occasional lapses in judgment firmly ensconce themselves in power.

Strong political opposition is a good thing for Virginia, and for the country.  Every candidate should have to fight hard to get or keep their job as an elected official.  When one party undermines the candidate selection process for the personal political advantage of a few party leaders it hurts that party, and then in turn it hurts the whole political environment.  Instead of celebrating dysfunction in the Democrat party, this should be cause for concern.

That reminds me of what I have heard about the Commanwealths Attorney races and why Ebert gets a free ride every year.

    Greg,

This is the same Ben Tribbett who smeared you and me with the “NAMBLA” attack while he was doing his work for State Senate Democrats (and also labeled you a racist, I think). Now they leave him twisting, twisting in the wind (possibly the wind that he so often breaks). Let’s just say that I have a difficult time feeling pity for him.
