Virtucon has the breaking story and plenty of analysis this evening about Chris Royse’s announcement that he is running against Frank Principi for Woodbridge Supervisor. The most fascinating part of Virtucon’s story is that former Woodbridge Supervisor Hilda Barg (a Democrat) is reported to be absolutely furious with Principi and will not be supporting him.
Four years ago Hilda Barg would do anything to protect Frank Principi’s chances to get elected. When the Rule of Law Resolution came up for votes she voted for it — even though she was actually opposed to it according to her later statements — because she was concerned that if she voted against this widely popular initiative it might make voters think that Democrats were soft on illegal immigration issues. Principi spilled a lot of ink in mailers telling Woodbridge residents that he would crack down on illegal immigration, but of course he did just the opposite and did everything he could to try to undermine it after he got elected. Hilda ended up looking pretty foolish as a result, being someone that wouldn’t vote her conscience because of political considerations and in her evaluation the only reason she put herself in that position was to protect Frank Principi.
Four years have passed and like a lot of Woodbridge residents, she’s learned that Principi has been a disaster. His antics on the board might be good for comic relief, but they aren’t good for Woodbridge, and instead of working to solve issues in the district he’s been busy getting Gerry Connolly to earmark money to his employer that ends up earning him pay raises. Businesses are leaving Woodbridge and Principi’s only real response is a centralized-planning proposal that only developers would love.
So now the core of Woodbridge Democrats (especially in terms of financial support) have decided that Principi is in no way a solution to their problems. Chris Royse has great crossover appeal based on his efforts to restore democracy to Haiti and his obvious concerns for the downtrodden that were developed as a Special Forces operator. Not many candidates have actually waded into some poverty-stricken third world nightmare of a country and actually worked and bled to help these unfortunate people have a better life. His approach is decidedly conservative because he has seen that work — personal responsibility, hard work, the rule of law and free enterprise are what gets the job done. Handing out unaccountable money to fix things only invites corruption and thuggery.
So here we have a first-term politician who has failed in Woodbridge, alienated broad segments of the electorate and many of the power brokers, and someone who has acted like a complete jerk. Running against him will be someone who will likely garner support from within both the parties, cross-party appeal, and a story that is utterly incredible.
This is the guy to dump the chump Principi in Woodbridge. Big time.
