Vote Jeanine Lawson In The Brentsville District Primary

By Greg L | 22 August 2011 | Prince William County | 4 Comments

Jeanine Lawson and Wally Covington square off in a primary for the Republican nomination in the Brentsville Magisterial District tomorrow in what will effectively be the deciding election for this district.  Here a pro-development establishment incumbent with a spotty record tries to fend off an insurgent campaign mounted by the activist who has proven to be the hardest working campaigner this election cycle.  If Jeanine Lawson wins tomorrow, residential development interests seeking to carve into the Rural Crescent will suffer a strong setback.

Jeanine should win this primary.  Covington was the flag-bearer for the atrocious Brentswood rezoning which would have dropped several thousand new homes in Gainesville where roads and public infrastructure couldn’t possibly have coped.  Wally has been a champion of just about every residential rezoning that has been proposed.  When the schools have tried to build infrastructure to deal with the residential growth Wally was responsible for, he refused to let any of this infrastructure be built, saying that it wouldn’t benefit his District, and leaving overcrowded schools along the Sudley Road corridor between the City of Manassas and I-66.  Wally is an incumbent just begging to be fired.

Jeanine started her campaign early, has been going door-to-door every day, and is raising money, outperforming some candidates who are running even for State Senate.  Her yard signs are all over the district and even seem to dominate in some neighborhoods.  This flawless, textbook, campaign should be a model for challengers at the Board level.  If anyone can unseat Wally Covington, this is the campaign to do it, and should that happen it is going to be extremely difficult for residential developers to push through rezonings in the future.

Still, taking out a well-funded incumbent in a primary is a tough task, even when they richly deserve it.  We don’t fire incumbents all that often in Virginia.

If you have time in the last 24 hours before the primary and want to know where your effort may make the biggest difference, this is the campaign to focus on. Jeanine is running very close here and just a little more help can put her over the top.

Jeanine will make an excellent supervisor. I wish her the best of luck tomorrow.

I got the chance to meet and speak with Jeanine the other week at her Meet-n-Greet and was very impressed by her level of involvement in our local politics and various local organizations, and when I asked her a couple very pointed questions, she was more than happy to sit down and discuss them in detail. She was also very friendly, genuine, and quite gracious. I’ve been telling everyone I know to vote for her, so hopefully we can unseat Mr. Covington and get the growth under control.

I voted for Jeanine, but feel she dropped the ball with her campaign. I don’t think her outreach was strong–as an interested voter, I didn’t find many (any?) good ways to stay in touch with the campaign. Hopefully, she was able to reach enough folks to defeat Mr. Covington.
