A nun gets killed by a drunken illegal alien in a horrific vehicle accident on a Sunday morning. State officials learn that the illegal alien had obtained a drivers license using an “Employment Authorization Document” given to him by the feds, and determine that Virginia should no longer issue driver’s licenses based on these credentials. So what does Chuck Colgan want to do to prevent illegal aliens from killing any more of the residents in his district?
He says let the illegal aliens get driver’s licenses.
That stunning answer is found in Colgan’s responses to the Virginia Catholic Conference survey which asks participants whether they agree with the statement “Virginia should restore the Employment Authorization Document (“work permit”) to the list of documents accepted by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles as proof of legal presence to obtain a driver’s license.” Colgan responded that yes, he agrees with that, while his opponent Tom Gordy, does not. Even the openly homosexual and “social justice” minded Adam Ebbin doesn’t think we should be issuing driver’s licenses based on an EAD.
There’s a really good reason for that, as an EAD has typically been provided by the feds to illegal aliens who are in the process of being deported but need to have an income in order to financially support minor children until that happens. It doesn’t establish legal presence (which is what a visa, or a “green card” does) at all, and the requirement under Virginia law is that driver’s licenses are only given to persons legally present in the Commonwealth.
You’d think after a horrific accident where one nun is killed and two others hospitalized by an illegal alien driving with a license that he got using an EAD — one that happened right in Colgan’s senate district, Colgan would be aware of the tremendous danger of such a foolhardy policy. Not only does this put illegal aliens on our roads, but a driver’s license allows persons to board aircraft and enter federal facilities - such as the 9-11 hijackers, some of whom used Virginia driver’s licenses to board aircraft that killed thousands of Americans in 2001.
Chuck Colgan’s support of providing illegal aliens with drivers licenses will, not may, result in Virginians needlessly losing their lives, if such a measure is passed in the General Assembly. It’s happened before, which is why we don’t allow use of an EAD to qualify for a Virginia driver’s license. For Colgan to knowingly put the lives of his constituents at risk in order to make life somewhat easier for illegal aliens to unlawfully reside in the Commonwealth he should be thrown out of office in November.
