You Can Learn A Lot About A Candidate On Facebook

By Greg L | 29 February 2012 | Manassas City | 39 Comments

Manassas Democratic Party nominee Patricia Richie-Folks hasn’t been doing a lot of campaigning in her bid for city council lately, so I thought it might be worthwhile to take a look at what she’s been up to on facebook to get an update.  I almost wish I hadn’t.

Richie-Folks has 42 facebook “friends” and among that list are the usual liberal democrats you’d expect to see.  There’s also a few on there you might not expect a candidate for office to publicly embrace, such as the Virginia Organizing Project, Occupy Richmond, the Virginia New Majority and the Virginia Coalition of Latino Organizations — all of whom are rather radical, anti-capitalist advocates for illegal immigration.  Aside from the wisdom (or lack thereof) of a candidate for office trying to portray herself as a “moderate” and at the same time publicly embracing “Occupy Richmond,”  what really strikes me is a candidate for office recently “friending” a Manassas smut shop named KK’s Temptations — presumably after announcing her bid for city council.

I interpret the publicly-available facebook activity of an announced candidate for office as being official activity of that person’s campaign.  If Richie-Folks “friended” the Boys and Girl’s Club, or SERVE, or some similar entity doing good in the community (which she has not) I’d understand that as a statement on her beliefs and convictions as a candidate.  When you’re running for office and come across an entry saying ‘here are some tips on how to give a “Mind Blowing Blow Job”‘ posted on the wall of a business that peddles pornography and decide that warrants “friending,” to me that is a campaign statement, but of a rather different sort.

So who else is “friends” with KK’s?  Brittany St. Jordan is one.  St. Jordan is self-described as “The Tattooed Tranny of Your Shemale Dreams” and makes a living acting in homoerotic adult films.  What a great association to make when you’re a candidate for office.  The local animal shelter not so much, but transvestite porn stars, you bet they’re facebook buddies with Patricia Richie-Folks.

I’ve heard it said that your moral character is shown no more clearly than when you do things and don’t believe anyone is watching you.  Clearly, Patricia Richie-Folks wasn’t expecting anyone evaluating her qualifications for office to do something as out of the ordinary as to look at her facebook page, so what she’s done here is pretty telling in my opinion.  Some things are clearly OK with her - bashing capitalism, promoting socialism, transsexual porn stars, illegal aliens, and ethnic tribalism.  What apparently is not OK, or at least noteworthy to her in any way, are the dozens of charitable organizations that serve the residents of Manassas and the most vulnerable among us or any local businesses that doesn’t involve sex toys.

This seems pretty consistent with what I’ve seen from Manassas Democrats over the past few years.  Some days knowing seems worse than remaining ignorant.  I guess this is one of those days.

UPDATE: The supposed “tranny of my shemale dreams” weighs in in defense of Patricia Richie-Folks, and it gets even more bizarre.

Greg, of all the things to focus on, you focus on the KK’s friend. I for one will vote the “R” card almost 100% of the time, but I am sick and tired of the candidates running on the social issues. Tell me what you are going to do for the economy, jobs or your stance on money for the military but I could give a damn about what contraceptives, gay marriage or abortion at this time. Focus on what effects the entire nation or community. Most people could give a damn about a small business that sells sex videos. I don’t watch them, but I could care less what my neighbor does in his or her own home. Now the friends with illegal alien groups and such, that is the issue we should focus on because it affects everyone.

I am a lifelong republican but I get sick and tired sometimes of the holier than thou attitudes of many here. Either focus on the issues or STFU.

STFU certainly wasn’t the most mature thing I ever posted but I do tire of crap like this. There are more important issues than someone’s FB page.

When the local press does little more than re-hash press releases, the candidate herself says almost nothing but platitudes, and her campaign is so far nothing but empty slogans, what else would there be to look at? If you’re going to know a candidate, the public statements they’ve made about themselves and their convictions are not only informative, but crucially important.

Here’s a challenge for folks who think like this: find me anything about Richie-Folks that demonstrates her true convictions and likely policy positions than her facebook page, that isn’t chock-full of meaningless drivel. Please.

If you knew Brittany St. Jordan, the person, you wouldn’t point out her association with your opponent, dimbulb, since Brit may be the most intelligent, articulate person in this discussion. Like the Former Officer said, focus on the issues that count, not the ones you want to make big for your own personal aggrandizement.

    Hello Greg,

I am curious how anyone being a friend of a friend of mine online and who has not ever spoken to or met me in person has any bearing on their ability to be a part of the Manassas government body. Your skewed logic of thinking that simply being my friend someone turns people into a sexual deviant and instantly have the overwhelming instinct to perform bizarre sexual acts down the main street of Manassas. It is Facebook not a Sunday brunch where we are all donned in leather and taking turns spanking one another while enjoying a tasty blend of VA wines and succulent cheese.

I understand that within your little bubble of puritanical wrath and hatred that anyone who doesn’t follow God’s law must be persecuted and dealt with accordingly. Well, I talked to God last night and she told me that you are way off base with your tirades and constant attacks on anyone who doesn’t follow your strict line of beliefs. She also said that for all of your gaybashing and mistreatment of people you are going straight to hell. The good news is though, if you turn your life around and start treating people fairly she is willing to give you a second chance.

Remember boys and girls, it’s usually the craziest people who have the loudest voices telling everyone else the world is going to end.

A Facebook friend of a convicted rapist, child abuser, murder yea that person would have dispayed serious moral flaw. Being an online friend of someone with different sexual beliefs, hmm maybe that displays openness to accept people for people and NOT being a bigot. If I took anything from this blog it’s that you sir are a close-minded ignorant humanbeing. Brittany is a beautiful person and your blog disrespected her, it’s a sad reality to try and win an election with hatred.

Maybe I’m the only dumb one in the room here -

is it that you are objecting to the fact that Ms. St. Jordan is in the adult industry, which is a legal enterprise generating more than $13 BILLION dollars annually, across a wide swath of demographics: age groups, political affiliations, religious affiliations and all segments of the economic hierarchy?

Are you objecting to the fact that Ms. St. Jordan is transsexual, which is an umbrella term which is affects a conservatively estimated 18 MILLION people worldwide?

Maybe it’s mere the fact that Ms. Richie-Folks would dare associate with a transsexual?

You do know that President Obama as a young man was in the care of a transsexual woman while living in Indonesia, right?

I don’t know what your obsession is with peoples personal lives is, or the need to judge based on what’s in their pants but your time would be better served focusing on the real issues troubling the US, namely economics.

I hope you burn in hell you bigot. If Ms. St. Jordan chooses to dress up like a woman and have sex on camera, you have no right to complain about it. Democrats embrace this kind of diversity, you narrow-minded Republitards just can’t handle it.

These comments really don’t matter What matters is people choosing who and what they perceive to be. Why is it that some people insist on chastising others. If you don’t really agree with theyre lifestyles then why do you want to gravitate yours on them!

What does matter is when these freaks start publishing my home address on twitter as an incitement to violence because I call them out on their behavior. I initiate with dialogue, they respond by threatening my family.

Yeah, they’re the ones occupying the moral high ground here. So typical of the left, which is great at mouthing platitudes about peace and diversity right up until one of their unhinged sycophants shows up on your doorstep to do harm to your daughters.

Liberalism is a mental disorder, proven once again.

She’s not even elected yet, but shows a bias that is contrary with the overwhelming wishes of the good people of the city. Even the council admitted they made a mistake (or were bamboozled by) k-k when they got the permit.

Brittany St. Jordan is a friend of mine; she has been for years. Yet that makes no difference in this forum.

We should vote for a candidate based on the issues that are relevant to our community and important to us, as individuals — economics, schools, police and fire department funding, traffic, border re-assignments, etc. Make each candidate accountable to providing solid answers to your questions — and show you viable plans of action.

If morals and morality are your schtick, might I suggest that we each sweep our own back porches before checking-in on our neighbors’ houses?

Postulating and preaching — regardless of your stripe — are best left for the pulpit … be it in a park, a church, or out amongst the trees.

Casting your vote is the best (and most effective) way to make your voice heard. Otherwise, as our elders always said, “If you don’t have something nice to say keep quiet.” Or as Former Officer succinctly put it, “STFU.”

Or perhaps this has an impact on local zoning policy. When a personal friend of Kim Skokan (the owner of KK’s) is associated with a candidate for City Council and happens to be a trans-whatever porn actor, I’d say there’s some relevance. The Manassas City Council recently dealt with a lot of zoning issues regarding sexually-oriented businesses in Old Town. Any new member of the council would certainly be weighing in on the implementation of the policy and any efforts to adjust it.

Citizen of Manassas ~ Can you truly “hear” yourself ask such an asinine question? Why not show our children relevant films regarding anti-bullying and anti-harassing matters — or about not sexting (which is prevalent in children much younger than you’d think — and has a lot more to do with lack of parental controls than anything else).

And, Greg, Ms. St. Jordan lives in Los Angeles. I doubt she’ll have any “influence” over anyone regarding zoning matters (not that she would have had any if she did live in Manassas).
