Manassas City School Board Candidates

By Greg L | 12 April 2012 | Manassas City | 14 Comments

The Manassas City Schools have been deeply troubled over the past few years, and on May 1st voters have an opportunity to deliver some accountability by removing a few of the incumbents who have presided over this mess.  Incumbents on the board really have nothing to run on other than their disappointing record, while challengers don’t have much to run on other than the fact they weren’t at the helm when things went south.

Here are the candidates.  Links to web pages are provided, if I could find them.

Scott M. Albrecht (incumbent Chairman)
Arthur P. “Art” Bushnell (incumbent Vice-Chairman)
Ilka V. Chavez (website)
Kermit Holmes Dance (incumbent)
R. J. “Jack” Magee, Jr. (incumbent)
Ellen M. Purdy (website)
Charles W. Sutherland

Other coverage of these candidates by A Bridge Too Far and a candidate forum tonight at 7:00 at City Hall may yield some insight into which of these candidates deserve your vote.  So far there’s rather little of substance to go on here, as only Charles Sutherland is offering any insight into their candidacies as far as I can see that isn’t the usual campaign boilerplate.  Charles and Ellen seem to be the most interesting challengers, and Kermit Dance is the incumbent I believe most deserves the boot.

I look forward to your comments on this race below.

Over at the Manassas Tea Party site (www.manassasteaparty.org) they have a poll going as to which school board member up for relection should definitely be voted out. Here are the current results:

    All of Them 51.4%

    Kermit Dance 20%

    None of Them 14.3%

    Vice Chairman Arthur Bushnell 8.6%

    Chairman Scott Albrecht 2.9%

    R. J. “Jack” Magee, Jr. 2.9%

The poll is still open if you want to cast your own vote.

Wasn’t it some lady named EJ Scott or something that started the write-in campaign? Don’t know her much, but she seemed awful interested in all this. Even wanted me to get some signs from her.

I wasn’t going to put anything pink on my lawn though. Geez.

    @ Maureen

Go read a few comments from the last few posts and you will see who admits to starting this write in campaign!

@ Sheryl write in folks who attended the Repulican convention

Why are you spending so much energy on this person? You are only hurting Jon Way and Ian Lovejoy who worked hard and deserve our republican support.

One question about Sheryl Bass was answered last night and that was what would Sheryl Bass sound and look like if she actually put the office and responsibility of public office above her personal ambition. Ellen Purdy and Ilka Chavez were both exceptionally articulate, professional and shining examples of what strong smart women can offer Manassas when they step forward to be leaders of the community.

Hopefully, Manassas will be smart enough to take them up on their offer and elect them and Charles Sutherland, the Central Office’s worst nightmare, to take over the helm of a school system that figuratively, and literally, is driving like a drunk looking for one last bar to stop at before going home.

I would use my name but I am a current teacher in the City Schools if you catch my drift. Mr. Sutherland was the only one who talked in an honest manner on the real problems our schools face today and what to do to change that for the better. He has my support! Teachers too are tired of the false platitudes and no substance that we currently are served up on a daily basis. Remember it was the present board that hired Dr. Pope who is now running out of town as fast as she can!

Oh, and the Manassas Ed. Association does not speak for me. They are bullies who intimidate candidates and the public to do their bidding which is basically more money and no accountability. They are big part of the problem with the City Schools today and the smart voter views anyone they endorse as suspect.

    Thank you.

News and Messenger Saturday edition - check it on line- tells us all about this little write in campaign and who is behind it. The GOP in Manassas is clearly working against Ian Lovejoy and Jon Way and for “moderate” Sheryl Bass. Pathetic Mr Thomas!

To: Leaders of the Sheryl Bass Adoration Society
    From: Loyal Republican Convention Attendee
Cc: Sheryl Bass, Manassas City Council
Cc: Steven Thomas, Manassas GOP Chair

Ms. Bass lost at the January Republican convention because she could not garner enough votes from the 400 plus people in attendance. Sorry you could not be bothered to get up at 8 a.m. on a Saturday to vote for your pink lovin’ gal, but because of your apathy, she lost. Ms. Bass signed a pledge to support the winners of the convention which she now seems to have trouble honoring. Claiming some “vast” conservative jedi mind control trick to get people to vote a certain way at the convention is the very tactic employed by losers as exemplified by known liberal Pamela Kinchloe’s letter to the editor a few weeks back attacking Manassas Republicans and stumping for Ms. Bass and Ms. Ritchie-Folkes (a Democrat).

Please stop your destructive nonsense, your are ruining the Manassas GOP Party and harming the very City you claim to care so much about.

Interesting premise. Going further, I guess that you would apply this same standard to members who attended the January convention and are now supporting Mr. Carman. Are they not acting with “destructive nonsense” and “ruining the Manassas GOP Party” too??

    Double, double toil and trouble…

The number one reason the write-in campaign gives for supporting Sheryl Bass?

Her work on the School Board. Combine that with her support of the schools on the city council and you have someone who has had more input into our schools than any other politician in Manassas That’s what the Lady MacBeths of Manassas are promoting; this is laughable as a grass roots movement, this is the Republican establishment pulling out their check books so they can keep on raiding our check books to support their selected ballets, and other pet public funded projects which just happens to find their way into their check books.

“Women of Manassas Unite!” ? Which, women? The real story of this coming election is not the Bass signs but the signs of the woman candidate that you will not see in Manassas this Spring. ‘Fair is foul, and foul is fair.’ Hey, Ladies?
