An Opportunity To Improve The PWC School Board

By Greg L | 25 May 2012 | Prince William County | 5 Comments

Just a few months after telling voters he wanted their vote and winning his election, Occoquan School Board representative Grant Lattin suddenly decided he didn’t have time for this post and resigned.  Now the board gets to fill the spot by appointment, subject to an election in November where voters can confirm that appointment.  Several candidates have announced their intention to seek this appointment, but only one of those is truly qualified.

Lori Bauckman-Moore is a longstanding community leader who graduated from schools in the Occoquan District, has been active in the PTA/PTO, boy scouts and girl scouts, the Republican party, and several appointed positions within local government.  One of the most important considerations to me is that she has time for this not only during the evenings when board meetings are scheduled, but during the day when most (if not all) school activities take place.  Anyone filling this slot has to have the opportunity to see the schools in action and draw their own conclusions instead of simply relying on staff to tell them what’s going on in the schools in their district.

One of my deepest frustrations with some who have served on the School Board is that they quickly become mouthpieces for county staff and forget who they actually represent.  As we saw during the fight over Math Investigations, the allure of becoming a paternalistic, hostile-to-parents, big spender with grandiose visions of what monuments should be erected for the pleasure of senior county staff must be tremendous.  We need people on this board who aren’t going to succumb to this disease, who will stand up and fight for students, parents and taxpayers, and shake things up when the right opportunity to do so presents itself.

Lori Bauckman-Moore is the right choice for Occoquan and Prince William County.

Yes, you’re definitely correct, Greg…this IS an opportunity to improve the School Board. In fact, last November I was wishing he had a challenger…and now, the opportunity is before us.

I agree with you Greg. Lori would be a terrific addition to the School Board. She is a terrific person who would have the best interests of the children and taxpayers of Prince William County in mind.

I agree Greg. You will not find a better person in the Occoquan District to fill this position. Lori has my 100% support and I encourage everyone to support her as well!

Lori is absolutely fantastic! I had the opportunity to work with her a couple years back on the Lincoln-Reagan Dinner and she is an absolute gem. She puts her heart and soul into everything she does, and her infectious energy and positive “go-get-em” attitude can’t be matched!
