Prince William County Chairman Corey Stewart will introduce a resolution this evening threatening to withhold county contributions to the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) unless the organization reverses resolution R3-2013, which advocates restricting Second Amendment Rights of Prince William County and Virginia residents.
I’ll be a lot more pleased once local governments realize what a huge misuse and waste of taxpayer dollars membership in these kinds of organizations really is even without the ridiculous forays into “gun control”, and instead of threatening to withhold dues, just pull out of MWCOG, VACOG and the like altogether. We’re spending $400,00 a year from the MWCOG alone, but what are we getting for it?
The Sheriff has more:
Birdies at McCoart report that Supervisor Candland has circulated a very strong letter that expresses support of the Board for the Second Amendment, and proposes to inform the MWCOG that PWC will also withhold its 2014 membership dues payment of more than $400,000 unless MWCOG rescinds its approval of the anti-gun resolution.
That seems like a no-brainer.
But the letter is apparently being held up by Chairman Stewart as he sorts out how he can seize the leadership role on this issue from Supervisor Candland, and Supervisor Principi is strongly opposed to the BOCS taking such a strong stand. Principi wants to work with the MWCOG to amend its resolution.
I really don’t care that much about who claims the credit for this. It’s good enough just to get this done.
UPDATE: The resolution withholding payment to the MWCOG passed, but just because a temporary halt of funding by Prince William County taxpayers to an entity hostile to our civil rights has been enacted we should by no means consider this issue resolved. We need to get out of the business of funding these meta-governmental bodies whose ostensible purpose is lobbying. If PWC needs to advance an issue with state or federal government, they can ask the citizens to do that. If they can’t make a compelling case to the citizens that it needs to be done sufficient to achieve the objective, than it probably shouldn’t be done.
