How Deep The Rabbit Hole Goes

By Greg L | 15 May 2013 | Prince William County | 5 Comments

Just in case anyone felt there weren’t enough depressing stories out there about how local governments in the area are being wasteful with our tax dollars comes this morning’s PWC Education Reform bombshell about how Prince William County Schools is secretly planning to build not one, but six pools in local high schools.  At the same time our county high schools schools are being badly ranked, our class sizes have grown to be the largest in the area, and academic performance isn’t at all where it should be bureaucrats and the county’s leadership want to blow money on building pools in all the new schools.

In meetings held over the past several days, Melissa Peacor, the Chief Executive of Prince William County, and Dr Steve Walts, the Superintendent of Prince William County Schools, met with the heads of NVCC and other individuals to discuss NVCC’s plans for their sports complex. At these meetings Mrs Peacor reportedly told Dr Walts that fees received from the public for pool usage might be sufficient to cover pool operating costs, but would never cover debt service costs. She reportedly told Dr Walts that the pools in the 12th, 13th , and 14th high schools would happen no matter what NVCC, QDD, or anyone else did.

Somehow, Dr. Walts and Melissa Peacor have gotten the impression that they make all the important decisions, and our elected bodies are simply rubber stamps that implement their will.  I don’t blame them too much for coming to that conclusion given that neither the School Board under Chairman Milt’s misguidance or the Board of County Supervisors under the reign of Chairman Corey Stewart have done anything to disabuse them of the notion that they aren’t accountable to anyone.  I am seriously frustrated with these elected bodies, however, for deciding that instead of representing the people their job is to facilitate the vision of the staff that are supposedly working for them.  A few members “get it,” but not enough to change the outcomes of votes, and seriously not enough to make the “leaders” of these bodies start talking a different agenda.

We’ve just completed one of those budget cycles where county supervisors moaned about how they’ve cut spending to the bone, and it is simply impossible to lessen the burden of the tax hikes they are imposing on taxpayers in any way.  We had endless discussion about how a drug treatment program in the jails that should be funded by the state isn’t affordable, only to see the county manage to somehow find the funding to restore the program lest all the convicts continue their drug addictions while in their cells.  Yet we somehow have almost a half million dollars that isn’t needed for anything else laying around that can be used for a “study” that will tell us how we supposedly can afford the capital and operational costs for swimming polls in our high schools.

You know, of course where this is leading.  As soon as thee of these schools get swimming pools we’re going to hear how the poor children without them will feel slighted and we have to retrofit every high school in the county to have one.  Silly?  That same rationale has been used to explain why all the schools are getting electronic billboards installed, and if a differential in student’s opportunity to glory in electronic propaganda is a serious enough concern to warrant shelling out a few million dollars for a mini-jumbotron in front of every middle school in the county, you better believe the crushing weight of pool envy is going to open the floodgates for a half billion in renovation costs at each and every existing high school.  It’s all about the self-esteem of the children, you know.

This is you.  You are little more than an involuntary resource suck for the oppressive machine we are all trapped in.

Morpheus: Do you want to know what it is?
Neo: Yes.
Morpheus: The Matrix is everywhere. It is all around us. Even now, in this very room. You can see it when you look out your window or when you turn on your television. You can feel it when you go to work… when you go to church… when you pay your taxes. It is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth.
Neo: What truth?
Morpheus: That you are a slave, Neo. Like everyone else you were born into bondage. Born into a prison that you cannot smell or taste or touch. A prison for your mind.

Tell us more about the electronic billboards.

I am sure local administrators are raking in the bucks while high school students flounder.
    In more local news.

Greg, not sure about your source but there are no plans for pools in six more high schools. Someone is feeding you false information.

I don”t believe they can get away with that. Peacor doesn’t have a lot of power at the moment and when Stewart is gone in 2015 she will have none.
