Federalism Is Dead
By Greg L | 14 July 2014 | Illegal Aliens, Virginia Politics, Prince William County | 23 Comments
I asked the Virginia Department of Social Services whether they were involved in placing illegal aliens in Youth For Tomorrow facilities in Prince William County and got this response:
Regarding information on the unaccompanied minor children coming from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. They have instructed us to refer anyone who asks or has comments to the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement. They are to call Eskinder Negash, Director, ORR, at (202) 4019246, or Ken Tota, at ORR, at (202) 4014858.
I guess we now understand to whom the government of our Commonwealth answers. Not to the people, but to the federal government.
Thanks, Governor McAuliffe for making our state government utterly irrelevant.

That’s a pretty big leap, Greg.
When an agency of the Virginia government is acting like nothing more than an appendage of the federal government, I think this is highly accurate. Why even HAVE a state government, or more specifically this particular agency in such a case?
And when you contacted Eskinder Negash to enquire, what did you learn? Or are you just going to whine because you’re upset with how you perceive this has been handled?
This was the message I emailed to Joe Gibbs’ Youth for Tomorrow on their website
http://www.youthfortomorrow.org/Home
I understand that your facility has accepted illegal aliens that have illegally crossed our border with mexico. I would like to know how many illegals you have accepted, their ages and how long they will stay. I also want to know if they are going to be released into PWC, what diseases they have and if any are gang members.
What is wrong with this country? It has been going downhill ever since the Democrats took over the executive office.
@M Watkins what diseases do YOU have? Are you a gang member?
Corey Stewart put this out on Facebook in the last hour: “The crisis at the border has again reached Prince William County. Without providing the County any notice, the Federal Government is now placing illegal immigrant children at private and perhaps federal facilities in our county. Although no County facilities are being used to house the children, I will ask the Board tomorrow to direct the County Executive to attempt to find out more about the location(s) where these children are being held and whether there is anything that the Board can do to stop it. While it may seem cold hearted, it is important that these children be sent back home since letting them stay simply entices even more children to attempt the long and dangerous journey to the United States.”
Did Stewart kind of forget the meetings with YTF?
Come on November!
McAuliffe got that in place since McDonnell left? Well then I have to give him credit / he’s the only politician that’s accomplished anything in many years. Didn’t realize you were a fan.
Outstanding statement at the BoCS today. Just outstanding. I stand up and applaud you.
@John, what was outstanding? Who made it?
Winston @ 2:20: Greg sternly but with tact and diplomacy, took the BoCS to task for not addressing the YFT issue directly. He told the BoCS to get County staff themselves, Zoning Administrators as an example, to go over to YFT and assess the situation themselves. He told them they were not doing their job and that he was deeply disappointed to see this very weak response. In case you don’t know, the BoCS is going to “seek legal counsel in determining what their options are WRT the DHS contract with YFT”. Whoopdy-do…….
>implying state government is ever relevant
Time to do away with states.
We have two Winstons now. Being the first I am now Winston1
“Regarding information on the unaccompanied minor children coming from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. They have instructed us…”
The unaccompanied minor children are instructing you?
“They have instructed” means the Federal Government has prescribed the medicine for the state to take!
Just speculation….and a question: If Youth For Tomorrow accepts responsibility for these illegal aliens from the federal government, doesn’t that mean they accept full financial responsibility?
If so, are they financially responsible for ALL costs involved, including those billed to the County, and hospital costs, and any costs for county social services, welfare, food, etc. etc.
There must be some written documents and communications involved. Someone in the County government, Corey, should acquire a copy of whatever documents exists between YFT and the federal government… and publish it for all of us to see!
Should YFT be given a written notice right away by the County or by citizens (to deter them), or, once they try to get reimbursed can the County or citizens/taxpayers of the Commonwealth sue them?
Just askin’ It’s time to USE legal remedies, instead of being abused by them.
Charles, my question is: how can the fedgov enter in a contract with a private entity for the purpose of housing criminals? Not trying to use rhetoric here – isn’t that what these alien children are? Criminals who have violated our federal immigration laws?
Confused as to why this angle isn’t being considered. Also curious as to why this isn’t a civil rights violation. Are US citizens provided material and financial support when they violate federal law? Is that a violation of the 14th amendment?
Not a lawyer, but I did stay at the Holiday Inn last night.
Obama considers them voters….uh… uh… I mean ‘refugees.’ However, anytime the feds transfer persons or material to a third party there needs to be some paperwork. We should know what it is.
Although not a lawyer, I have dealt with lawyers all over the world. I had suggested two years ago that I could set up an entity to USE the legal system against an intrusive government, instead of being ABUSED by it. But no one was interested. However, if we, i.e. the citizens or the County, ascertain information and obtain documents, we can begin a plan.
Remember to boycott the Joe Gibbs Fair in October!
Winston, I will just switch to Churchill. I have been Winston a long time but I don’t frequent this blog often. Wouldn’t want to make you undergo a name change if you are a regular.
The Conservative Treehouse has been doing a very good job digging into this.
They were provided information on how to track the spending:
http://theconservativetreehouse.com/2014/07/20/unaccompanied-alien-children-transfers-to-your-community-uac-research-where-are-the-illegal-aliens-and-unaccompanied-alien-minors-being-placed/#comments
Note that YFT got one of the BIGGEST grants: (and there is a high probability that YFT is sheltering entire families, not “children”)
2014 Bristow, Virginia – 1 facility – Youth For Tomorrow [Residential Shelter UAC Program ] Address: 11835 Hazel Circle Drive BRISTOW, VA 20136 HHS Grant $8,314,702
“We have also included the exact amount of the HHS grant for two reasons. Number one, so that you can see how much this is costing you, the taxpayer. However, there is a more valuable secondary reason. We have identified (through extensive research) that each UAC, each individual, is estimated/evaluated at a HHS cost level of around $40,000 per grant (give or take). So if you see a grant for $2,325,000 you can divide by $40k and find out that’s about 58 (people) UAC’s in that facility or process for the quarter (3 month period), or time they are being transitioned/processed in that facility or organization.”
[Ed note: great catch finding this article. A big tip-of-the-hat goes out to you on this!]
Greg, please know that DSS was broken long ago, especially in Manassas.
