A few days ago I estimated the cost of having the federal government dump juvenile illegal aliens in Virginia based on statistics from a few years ago. Today the federal Department of Health And Human Services released new data and the problem is quite evidently worse than I thought. Instead of getting about 3,000 juvenile illegal aliens dumped in the Commonwealth, we’re on track to get even more as the federal government increases the proportional burden that the Commonwealth must bear while the feds pass on problems they created and aren’t interested in solving at all.
In 2010, according to information that the VERA Institute for Justice got from the federal government, 5% of illegal aliens in the “Unaccompanied Alien Children” program were placed in Virginia. The recent report, which covers numbers from January 1, 2014 to July 7, 2014 indicates 2,234 illegal aliens have been sent here of the 30,340 in the report. The federal government conservatively estimates 65,000 illegal aliens will enter the UAC program this year. So far 57,525 have arrived, so this estimate will be revised upwards very soon, and applying the current placement rate of 7.26% we can expect 4,719 to wind up in Virgina this year.
That’s only accounting for juvenile illegal aliens crossing the border without a parent, or do not have a parent living in the United States. Children under those circumstances are not entered into the UAC program, but just melt into the general population of illegal aliens unlawfully residing in our communities with little or no accounting and just about no chance they’ll ever appear at an immigration court hearing. Those numbers are just about impossible to guess at this point.
My back-of-the-envelope estimates suggest that this is going to cost Virginia taxpayers $496 million this year. Just for the UACs that we know of, and not counting other juvenile illegal aliens that the now-overwhelmed Border Patrol cannot catch because it’s busy changing diapers and wiping runny noses. That’s more than the commonwealth will spend in the next year on the entire judicial system in Virginia. That’s eight times the amount of money Virginia will spend on services to veterans. But we’re going to spend that much on illegal aliens who shouldn’t be in Virginia at all.
Just imagine what we could do to ease overcrowding in our schools and improve student-teacher ratios if instead we spent that money on the children we already have here now.
