Manassas Votes, The local PAC run by Democrats Stephen Hirsch and Nancy Ingram, put out an ad today in the local paper endorsing candidates for the Manassas City Council elections, and what do you know, there’s Republican Mark Wolfe including his endorsement of a slate of two Democrats and one Republican. After voting for every tax increase imaginable and every spending program anyone could possibly conceive, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. Still, I hope the Manassas GOP finally kicks this guy off the Republican Committee. He’s just begging for it, and someone needs to step up and make sure that happens.
It’s not as if this kind of action is entirely unusual, given that Ken Cuccinelli was removed from his local committee after endorsing a non-Republican a few years back when the Republican candidate for an office in Virginia Beach turned out to be a complete turd and the independent running against him was a highly respected former member of the House of Delegates. That time, the Prince William Committee followed procedure and stripped him of his membership even though they really didn’t want to do it. Here’s a case of someone willfully trying to sabotage Republican campaigns in his own district and whose been acting like a liberal spendthrift during his entire tenure while violating ethics rules regarding conflicts of interest so he can funnel taxpayer money to the entity that pays his wife a salary.
This whole campaign season in Manassas has been a mess from the get-go. Hal Parrish plays hands-off on the election since he wants to run for higher office and lets Andy Harrover blindside the committee by not telling them he plans to not run for re-election until the filing deadline for candidates. That leaves the Republicans, for the first time anyone can remember, without a full slate of candidates for city council. Marc Aveni runs for re-election, Sheryl Bass, who lost a nomination contest two years ago because she’s a pathetic tax-and-spend liberal with a Republican bumper sticker, filed to run as a Republican (and sadly, she’ll likely get in this time). She’s joined by Democrats Ken Elston and Patricia Ritchie-Folks, of which at least one will win a spot. What a disaster. With 10%+ annual tax hikes, only one of the four candidates running have shown any inclination to control spending in any way at all, and that’s Marc Aveni.
Now we have Republican elected officials endorsing Democrats for office who are running against Republican candidates. Calling Hal Parrish - your legacy in Manassas is ablaze, your city is on the brink of being run by folks who can’t bankrupt it quickly enough, and if you think this is going to help sell a nice narrative as you run to replace Chuck Colgan in the Senate, you’re wrong.
Just think how many votes Nero would have garnered among the Romans as a guy like Mark Wolfe was busily scurrying around the city setting it on fire. Time to put down the fiddle and start putting out the fire, my friend.
