Getting To Know Corey Stewart

Sometimes when you go through campaign finance reports you can learn quite a bit about a candidate.  Donors tend to have quite personal connections to the candidates they contribute to, and through those connections get to know the real-life personal convictions that drive these candidates in a way that voters don’t often get to see.  If a candidate tells voters during their campaign they’re going to do one thing, but their donor base believes something radically different that’s quite a red flag.

In addition to Corey Stewart’s typically disturbing haul of campaign cash from the developer community, and a curious large contribution from someone with the same name as a brutal North Korean dictator, there’s a contribution reported from someone whose frequent political commentary should make Republicans absolutely cringe.

“99% of the TeaBagger Nation has no idea what Socialism or Communism is really about …. A true Marxist would have outlawed all forms of private insurance - especially health care - and lined their execs up against the wall …. instead ObamaCare has handed insurance companies another forty million customers. This makes President Obama Mr Chamber of Commerce, not a Marxist. So, next time you hear some one discussing “Marxism”, pity your hard-of-thinking brother and kindly suggest that he pull his TeaBagger head out of his ass.”

What could Corey Stewart have ever told an individual who believes that Obama is not enough of a Marxist for his tastes that would make that person write a check to his campaign? Or consider this quote:

“I trust our well-trained police forces to protect me and my family, when we are in public, and I have nothing but contempt for the Virginian Gun Nuts who think otherwise. The cops are experienced professionals, who spend long hours learning the “rules of engagement”, unlike the civilian assholes that think their pistols provide protection …. so I fear them, rather than respect them… The NRA and its belligerent morons are behind every brainless gun law and they ought to be ashamed of themselves.”

Here’s an elected official who tells voters that he has the greatest respect for our Constitutional rights, but people who think only the military and police should have guns are donating to this elected official’s re-election campaign?  How reassuring.

If you take a look at Corey Stewart’s campaign finance report, about the only contributor you can find that holds what Republicans might consider to be “mainstream” values would be John Gregory, but although he’s a nice guy, the fact he owns a construction company and that 97.6% of his donations this past year are from the construction and real estate industries is probably more telling.  Most of the rest of the donors are those who have received recent favorable treatment by the Prince William County government, such as the Potomac Nationals baseball franchise.  In terms of individuals, who are driven by conviction rather than financial gain, there aren’t a whole lot of individuals to consider, and one of those very few people is George Delimba.

Who thinks Obama should display more adherence to Marxist principles, and who thinks donating money to Corey Stewart’s campaign is a good idea.  But you can trust Corey to be a “conservative” Republican.

Right.

Corey and George are friends. They visit each others houses. Their boys play nor played together on Little League teams. All that said, Corey appointed George as the At-Large representative to the Park Authority Board a few years ago.

Since 2008, Corey has raised $ 1,178,475 for his Chairman races and $ 816,636 for his Lt Gov. campaigns, less the $ 263,900 transferred from his Chairman’s fund to his Lt. Gov. fund or a net of $ 1,731,211. One million, seven hundred thousand dollars. Doesn’t anyone find this startling? He was first elected Chair in 2006 to “fight the good fight” against developers but he abandoned that and PWC taxpayers, by his own words, in August 2007 to campaign against illegal immigration. But he really didn’t abandon developers. He needed their money to fund his campaigns for Lt. Gov., and used the mantle as the “Illegal Immigrant Crusader” to get the votes to remain in office. Since 2008, the county has approved 10, 041 (yes ten thousand) new permits for single family, townhouse and condominium homes. Assuming an average $ 250,000 sales price, developers have sold over 2.5 BILLION dollars in residential realty under his watch. Of course they’d give him $1 million in contributions! Most of those houses are tax negative meaning their sales prices aren’t enough to cover the cost of County services provided to those homeowners, so existing homeowners have to be taxed higher to cover the shortfall. And yet his lemmings grovel at his feet about what a wonderful job he is doing keeping taxes low and slowing the growth of government.

I am just stunned that so few people “see” this.

Since you are a CPA, can see why you are stunned.

But as a Cynic or Extreme Realist - am not stunned.

Here in OneDumpty Co. Md, the politicians tell us and have told us that development will lower real estate taxes - spreads out the burden. And the voters buy this nonsense. Tell them that it will raise RE Taxes and they tell you you are crazy. Explain it to them and most can not phantom such abstract concepts.
