Purpose
Black Velvet Bruce Li provides you with local political coverage for Prince William County, Manassas and Manassas Park, and to some degree other areas of Virginia. Our goal is to give voters the information they need in order to make informed decisions about how they might vote. Local political coverage in the newspapers is spotty at best, and our intent here is to fill in the details so when you walk into a polling place, you have a solid understanding of the issues, candidates and propositions on the ballot.
Lawsuit
Not everyone appreciates the coverage this blog provides on local races. One candidate has even gone so far as to file a lawsuit against me.
History
Black Velvet Bruce Lee was established by an anonymous blogger in early 2006. He was especially critical of one candidate and gained a reputation for digging out inconvenient truths. When the campaign in question imploded and started making legal threats, this individual deleted the blog and disappeared into cyberspace. I saw the Black Velvet Bruce Lee blog as an invaluable resource for voters and re-established it as best I could with the same look-and-feel. Unfortunately I was unable to recover any of the posts from this prior incarnation of the blog.
Black Velvet Bruce Lee continued on blogger until early July, when it was rehosted on bvbl.net. Blogger is a free service, and you get only a little bit more than what you pay for. It now resides on my personal servers which run Debian Linux, and this blog is made possible by WordPress, MySQL and Apache which are all open source software packages.
On July 31st 2006, a letter was received from the law firm of Manatt, Phelps and Philips, LLP in Los Angeles alleging trademark infringement of Bruce Lee. Their interest in BVBL was the admitted result of a local blog troll who decided to seek revenge for what happened to Steve Chapman’s campaign. In order to help resolve the situation, the original site at blogger was taken down and some potentially infringing images have been removed. Attempts to negotiate with this firm were rebuffed, and on advice of counsel I decided that the expense of possibly defending a lawsuit brought by this firm would not be worth it even if it was likely that a court would decide in my favor. This site’s name was changed to Black Velvet Bruce Li in August as a result.

In order to foster quality discussion, I will delete or edit comments to prevent discussion threads from being hijacked by those who would post off-topic personal attacks against other posters. If you’d like to engage in a personal crusade against another poster, start up your own blog and engage in this behavior there. Repeat offenders are subject to having their access to this site restricted, or their ability to post comments controlled in some fashion. Comments which I deem inappropriate for this or any other reason will be removed without notice.
If you believe a comment posted on this site is inappropriate, feel free to contact me and I will be happy to review it. If you feel your comment has been wrongly modified or deleted, I’d be happy to explain what the problem was and provide guidance on how to avoid future problems.
One of the tools used to manage the quality of these discussions is a moderation queue, which is triggered when something looks like spam, or when it contains certain words or phrases that have been used in inappropriate comments in the past. If you see your comment directed to the moderation queue, it doesn’t necessarily mean that there’s a problem with your comment, and it will be reviewed as soon as possible. Most of the time these comments are reviewed within a couple of hours, and in the majority of cases they’re approved.
Editorial Policy
The contributors on Black Velvet Bruce Li provide news and commentary from a decidedly conservative perspective. We call ‘em like we see ‘em, and don’t attempt to balance our viewpoint in any way. If we post something that isn’t factually correct, please let us know and we will be happy to post a retraction or provide the actual factual information as is appropriate. Despite our strongly held political beliefs, we serve the truth first, even when it’s inconvenient to us. Although we try our best to get the facts right, we’re sinners like the rest of the world and occasionally get things wrong. If you think we’re wrong, an email is a lot more effective than lawsuit threats in getting something fixed.
